KAYA ASHRAM

A Clasical Dance School

Kaya Ashram was founded on October 6, 2017, as a full-fledged Bharatanatyam dance-based school. Bharatanatyam style is known for its distinctive features, including a fixed upper torso, bent legs with knees flexed (Araimandi), intricate footwork, and a vocabulary of sign language based on hand gestures, eye movements, and facial expressions. Bharatanatyam dancers or students must have a deep understanding of all the Adavus.

The term 'Adavu' is derived from the Tamil root 'adu,' which means 'to dance.' Adavus comprise sets of basic dance steps that serve as the foundation and technique of Bharatanatyam. They act as building blocks for creating longer sequences, with each Adavu having a different name and purpose. Practicing Adavus also enhances a dancer's endurance, posture, mudras (hand gestures), dhristi bheda (eye movements), and more. It can take anywhere from one to four years to master all of the Adavus.

In my school, I focus on training my students in Bharatanatyam Adavus, which helps them develop precise performance skills and spontaneous artistic abilities for performing a Bharatanatyam piece. As part of this training, I have organized several shows to assess their proficiency under the banner of Kaya Aasrom. My senior students have performed with me at numerous corporate shows and various national events as well. Kaya Aasrom has two divisional brunch, one in Dhaka and the other in Chattogram, Bangladesh.
